Welcome to the training! This week we will be looking at Logging on, Registering, and Account Settings. I have included a link to an explanatory PowerPoint slideshow at the end of this post to get you started.
Assignment: email the trainer (training@bpl.on.ca) your new login nickname and a short message on your first impressions of the new website and catalogue.
Any questions can be emailed to the trainer, or posted as a comment on this blog post. Remember, the FAQ and Help buttons are on the site to help you too.

NEXT WEEK- Searching and My Borrowing
Hello all you eager beavers! I see many of you out there have already logged on to our new Catalogue and are making your way through assignments 1 and "The exciting side" of things by doing our Scavenger Hunt.
ReplyDeleteNow that we are a couple of days in I just want to respond to a few of the questions posed by your colleagues thus far.
Q. Why can't I open and view the PowerPoint? When I try to it asks me to upgrade/ download my flash player. When I try to do this, it still doesn't work.
A. This is another reason as to why it is important for all us in Library Land to be using Firefox rather than Internet Explorer. Its not like we Library Ladies and Web Techies have anything against Internet Explorer, but as IT hyas informaed us, our server cannot handle all the computers upgrading our version of Internet Explorer at this time. As the Technology world changes and grows, the sites we are accessing (including our own new site), will not work properly with an older version of Internet Explorer. However, Firefox, can be put on all of our computers and will load almost any site (including the training PowerPoint, AND the new BPL website). So, as it stands, if you want to view the PowerPoint, be sure to open them in Firefox. If you need your computer to have Firefox upgraded, loaded onto it, or would like it to be made the default browser; please put a ticket into IT, and they will do their best to ensure this gets done asap.
Q. Will the Scavenger Hunt Questions change every week.
A. No. The Scavenger Hunt questions will not change. You have the entire training period to send those in and once you have done that, you do not need to go back to them.
Q. If I am not required to do the training, what is required to be in the draw for the IPad.
A. Everything. To be in the draw you need to complete all 5 weeks of training questions, AND the Scavenger Hunt to get your name in the draw. And don't forget!!! This all needs to be sent to the training email (training@bpl.on.ca), by 5pm on May 31.
Thanks for being so keen about the training y'all!!
Don't forget... Have fun & Happy Day!!
This training is great!

We have noticed that in this new catalogue customers have the ability to change their pin numbers. It currently is policy to only allow the last 4 digits of the phone number.
ReplyDeleteI changed my pin and then checked my record in Sirsi and the new pin displayed. Then I changed it again in Sirsi back to the old pin and catalogue allowed me to enter again using the old pin. So the system works well for staff to help the public when they have forgotten their pin but this feature is a change in policy. Can we further explain this to staff?
In response to Sparkles...
ReplyDeleteWith the new catalogue, customers will have the option of changing their PIN, using up to 10 alphanumeric characters. This is a change from our former policy of using only the last four numbers of a customer’s phone number. In order for a customer to change their PIN, an email address is required. In the event a customer forgets their password, they can click ‘Forgot your password?’ conveniently located on the Login page. An email message will be sent to their email address, providing them with a link that they can click to change their password.
They will receive the following message:
Hello CUSTOMER NAME,
You recently requested a Burlington Public Library password reset.
To complete the process, please click the following link: http://bplcat.bibliocommons.com/user/reset_password/ etc
If you did not ask to have your password reset, or if you have received this message in error, please contact support@bibliocommons.com.
Thank you,
BPL
Hope this answers your question :)
Happy Day!!
I am logging on from home on an Apple laptop, using Firefox. I find I cannot log on using the BPL Beta Website link.

Hi Nina! Glad to hear you are giving the training a hearty try. I am sorry to say that you will not be able to access the BPL Beta Website outside of the Library (according to IT).
ReplyDeleteHope this helps!
Happy Day!!
